(92) Persistent feature I

Laundromats are one of the truly persistent features of urban centres. They remain about the same even as the types of housing and commercial or industrial activities in a neighbourhood morph around them.

On long road trips we find the good Laundromat comforting and practical. At home, in contrast, we tend to find them depressing, lonely places. In order to avoid them we allocate a portion of the POWcityblog bunker’s operating budget to an extensive, in-house wash installation. (The equipment for the latter we sourced from a 1950s vintage ocean liner being scrapped at Alang, India.) Despite our contradictory feelings we salute the Laundromat for its ubiquity.

This joyful 1970s image is from the Laundromat right at Queen and Spadina; the soap dispenser therein to be specific.

editor’s note: even cool people must do laundry. Beautiful butterfly.
