In all of our POWcityblog image patrols we never really thought to look for images of pregnant women. There are just not that many to find. Does anyone know why? This one is in the window of a social agency in the east end.
Public service announcements and other forms of free advice from the government about how to live and conduct yourself have become pretty rare. They kind of had their heyday during the Cold War. Back then it actually mattered that life be better in the West than east of the Iron Curtain. If we were going to be poised for a nuclear war all the time then it had to be in aid of defending something worth defending, like having a better standard of living, good manners, more consumer choice, drinking milk, the right to vote, being smoke-free, wearing a seatbelt, clean streets and nice cities, not driving drunk or whatever. Political correctness and neo-conservatism, curiously, worked together to help kill messages from the nanny state. We're pretty much on our own now.
