(60) 250 University
On either side of 250 University Ave we find these relief works softening the corners. The entire building is a nice piece of mid-century modern from the linoleum in the empty drug store on ground level to window details and these relief elements. On our walks and explorations we find our eye increasingly keen on this kind of thing. Toronto flowered in its conservative, greyish, banks-and-insurance kind of way at mid century and so we find ourselves looking at things that have been long familiar and obvious with a new appreciation. We pass these decorative features sometimes daily and never thought to look more closely. The feminine element in both is strong. Is that a Mohawk haircut on the lower feature, we hope so. Note to owner: break out the power washer. 250 University is pretty sweet, we'd like to know it will be well cared for in the future as it moves from the merely retro to the genuinely historical.
